The 2014 Flower Festival!

This is a posting that I should have put up 2 months ago...

They had been preparing for months – all the groundskeepers.  And then, on February 21st the day finally came!  The 2014 Flower Festival was finally here!

The weather was just starting to turn warm – the end of spring, I guess.  There was a parade.  People in costume.  A town festival.  During the past 9 months that I have been out here, it was easily the most colorful experience I have had.  It’s probably the most colorful event all year.

It started with a marching band…

There were a few floats…

Followed by students of all ages in all sorts of costumes…

And from here we all followed along to the festival.

Both Disney characters and the modern iteration of the Smurfs seemed to be a theme this year.

After staying in their houses during the cold months (where the temperature would get all the way down to like, the 50s) people were ready to get out and stroll around.  Almost like it was the county fair.

It’s all gone now.  The flowers are dead and have been replaced with more rugged varieties.  The weather has turned, once again.  We have all retreated back into our air conditioned sanctuaries from the heat.  Last week (end of March) the temp got all the way up to 108 degrees.

But the memory of that weekend remains.  It was a happy 3 days.  There was a collective, glorious excitement in the air.  And we all reveled in it.
